Tuckpointing & Repointing

Mortar is the sacrificial part of a brick wall. It is meant to wear before the brick does, and when it crumbles, water gets into the wall and into the home. Tuckpointing, or repointing, replaces the failed mortar so the wall can shed water again.

We remove deteriorated mortar to a proper depth, clean the joints and pack in new mortar in thin layers. Choosing the right mortar matters: older, softer brick needs a softer mortar, because a hard modern mix can damage it. Many older Nashville homes fall in that category.

FAQ

Common questions about tuckpointing & repointing

How do I know my mortar is failing?

If it is crumbling, recessed more than a quarter inch or you can push a key into it, it is time.

Is tuckpointing the same as repointing?

The terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly, tuckpointing adds a contrasting thin line, but most people mean replacing mortar joints.

Can I just caulk the cracks?

No. Caulk is not a substitute for mortar and traps moisture. The joint should be repointed.
